For years, ordinary high-schooler Kousaka Kyousuke has had an icy relationship with his younger sister Kirino, a star athlete who is also a star student. They barely say two words to each other. One day, Kyousuke finds the DVD case of a moe-style anime lying in the foyer. His curiosity gets the better of him, and when he tries to identify who dropped it, he learns that its owner is someone he never would have suspected.

While being grilled by Kirino over why he hasn't made any progress in the game she ordered him to complete, it occurs to Kyousuke that she needs some friends that she can talk to without concealing her otaku interests. On the advice of his childhood friend Manami, Kirino signs up on an SNS otaku community and is invited to an IRL meet by the moderator. However, when she goes there...

Kirino finds her first otaku friends at the IRL meet: "Kuroneko" and "Saori Bajeena." They spend their days deep in discussions over their otaku interests. Seeing Kirino this way puts Kyousuke's mind at ease. Then, just as he thinks his "advice" to her is over and he can get back to his old life. he senses an alarming presence when he comes home one day...

One day, Kirino's non-otaku, "public" friends -- Aragaki Ayase and Kurusu Nanako -- come over to visit. Kyousuke is harshly told by Kirino to not let her friends see him. Just then, a delivery arrives, but Kirino, duped by the high-end cosmetics box it came in, snatches it away from Kyousuke. In reality, though, the package was sent by Saori Bajeena, and contains things that must never be seen by Kirino's non-otaku friends.

On the way home from an enjoyable Summerket. They bump into Aragaki Ayase, Kirino's best friend. In spite of the quick thinking of Kuroneko and Saori Bajeena, Kirino babbles on and on, badly rattled. Kirino and Kyousuke try to slip away, but Ayase puts the pieces together. Then, as they engage in a heated exchange...

Kyousuke is asked about his relationship with Manami by his friend, Akagi. Akagi is exasperated when Kyousuke answers that, although they don't have a romantic relationship, he doesn't want her to be taken by anyone else. Just then, Kyousuke learns that Manami's family of traditional Japanese sweets-makers will be holding a fair, and he is volunteered to act as taste-tester. He spends a soothing evening at Manami's house, where he feels more comfortable than he does at his own.
