“Terra Nova” depicts the day-to-day life of the families of the fishing communities living by the Portuguese coast in the 30’s. It portrays the fishermen’s lives, families, personal relationships, and political conflicts of that time.

In the '30s, the “Faina Maior”, as the cod-line fishing would become known, was one of the most important economic activities and, for many families, the only means of survival.

A smuggling attempt is disrupted by the Police. Filipe gets arrested which keeps him from saving his family. The romantic affair between Mariana and Toino continues to blossom. Anabela and her parents are arguing more than ever.

Doctor Bernardo accepts the Captain’s offer to join them in their next journey aboard the lugger Terra Nova. First Mate Manuel meets Manuela, Tó Verde’s sister, and for much of Zé Sol’s despair, they feel instantly attracted to each other.

The PVDE closes the siege to the labor union forcing Pedro to run away before Amélia can tell him she’s pregnant. Without any news, she feels hopeless. The relationship between Manuel and Manuela doesn’t seem to have a future.

It’s the start of the Summer, and the Terra Nova sets sail to the North Atlantic. Farewells are painful. In Nazaré, the bathing season begins. One holidaymaker. Gonçalo, meets Mariana and feels immediately attracted to her.

Terra Nova reaches the fishing banks of the North Atlantic, but fish is scarce, and frustration builds up. In dry land, Gonçalo continues to try to seduce Mariana. Pedro can’t forget Amélia and decides to return.
