In the first part of The Putin interviews, director Oliver Stone begins his interviews with Russian President Vladimir Putin by presenting his biography. Putin explains his childhood, educational background, and ultimately gives extensive details about his improbable journey navigating through the Russian government. The emergence of "Putinism" and the strained relationship between Russia and the United States are also discussed.

In the second episode of The Putin Interviews, Putin gives Oliver Stone a look into his life outside of politics, which includes a tour of Putin's horse stables and watching him play hockey. The state of democracy in Russia is called into question, as well as the notion of equal rights for all Russian citizens.
