Part 1 of 2. Jim Rockford (James Garner), as head of an agency which investigates cases that are "closed" by the police, is approached by a young woman (Lindsay Wagner), to find out whether her father (Bill Quinn) was slain or committed suicide. With a lead from Sara's young brother, Nick (Bill Mumy), Rockford looks into Butler's death and is intrigued enough by what he learns to proceed with the investigation. The case becomes more complex when in the process of investigating, Rockford, the hunter, becomes the hunted.

When private eye Jim Rockford (James Garner) succumbs to the pressures of his attorney friend, Beth (Gretchen Corbett) to investigate a homicide involving a screenwriter, he suddenly becomes a target of would-be assassins. Beth convinces Jim that Ann Calhoun (Patricia Smith) did not slay her screenwriter husband. While investigating, Jim is nearly run over by a truck, the first of a series of attempts on his life. His continued pursuit leads to a strange circle of friends, including socialite Elizabeth Gorman (Nancy Malone), ex-attorney and now screen copywriter Clyde (Walter Brooke), and the well-bred Eliot Malcolm (Linden Chiles).

Susan Strasberg guest stars as Deborah, a wealthy Texan's wife, who hires Jim Rockford (James Garner) to deal with a blackmail problem. While Deborah and rough-hewn Ryder (Art Lund) enjoy the affluent life and people still refer to Deborah as Countess, a hangover from her previous marriage, she suddenly is confronted by hoodlum Carl (Dick Gautier), who remembers her jumping bail on a minor charge some years back. Rockford suggests she tell all to husband and police but she fears it will ruin her lifestyle. Part of the problem is solved when Carl is fatally shot, but Rockford suddenly becomes the prime suspect.

Rockford (James Garner), doing a favor for a longtime friend, checks on a philandering husband and finds him dead under mysterious circumstances. When Janet (Corrine Camacho Michaels) asks Rockford to check on Prentiss, who called her in a frenzied state of mind, she's concerned about his health and not his extra-marital activities. Police term the death a suicide but Rockford pursues, further uncovering a ring of blackmailers.
