September 1942. The RMS Laconia travels the Atlantic Ocean carrying Italian prisoners of war, British troops, and civilian passengers. While Junior Third Officer Thomas Mortimer befriends the enigmatic Hilda Smith, beneath the sea, a German U-boat looks for targets.
