The Station Eleven Podcast

When two strangers share their names, they're no longer strangers. And when a global pandemic happens in the midst of strangers meeting, that also changes the relationship a bit. That's where we find our characters in Episode 1 of Station Eleven. From the death of an actor and missing-in-action child wranglers to doomsday cell-phone calls and stockpiling at a grocery store, Kirsten and Jeevan unknowingly bind themselves together as the world falls apart. Hosts Angelica Jade Bastién (Vulture) and Patrick Somerville (creator of Station Eleven) they dive into the first episode. They dig into the importance of trust between characters and share insights into building a character with actor Himesh Patel (Jeevan).

Sometimes, the most dangerous thing about being alone in 2020 is no one knowing who you are. Thankfully, there’s family and companionship in the Traveling Symphony, a rag-tag team of actors and musicians dedicated to creating art in the post-apocalyptic world of Station Eleven. In this episode, Patrick and Angelica explore the culture of the Traveling Symphony and the dramatic end of Episode 2. They dig into behind-the-scenes insights with director Jeremy Podeswa and talk about the pros and cons of a world without technology.

It's never easy being an artist, especially when you are working through personal chaos. This is what we see in the artistry and life of Miranda Carroll. From her meet-cute with Arthur in a diner to her final moments of life, Miranda is a complex character with a life as complicated as the art she creates and the choices she makes. In this episode, Patrick and Angelica are joined by actor Danielle Deadwyler, who plays Miranda, and Episode 3 director Hiro Murai. Together, they dig into Miranda's backstory, developing a character, and how to craft a love story without it taking over a story.

Post-pans may be without trauma, but they don’t seem to understand the idea that you shouldn't talk to strangers. This is at the crux of many of the arguments between Alex and Mackenzie in Episode 4. Join Angelica and Patrick as they discuss all of the complicated relationships and dynamics with director Helen Shaver. We also hear from Helen about how she gets the most out of her actors while making them feel safe on set.

Sometimes in a pandemic, an airport is no longer an airport. It becomes a home and a community...and sometimes a prophet isn’t a prophet, but a child who burned the past to the ground. Episode 5 gave us a major plot twist and revealed not everything is what it appears to be. Angelica and Patrick dig into the big reveal of the episode and share which character they identify with most. They’re joined by head of production design Ruth Ammon, who shares behind-the-scenes secrets about how she conceives of and creates entire worlds, where she finds inspiration, and what it's like to build an entire airport in pieces.

When Kirsten tracks down a wounded David and his Undersea, she agrees to join them on their journey to the Museum of Civilization. On this episode, hosts Angelica Jade Bastién and Patrick Somerville are joined by costume designer Helen Huang. Helen shares how she crafted and shaped the look of the Undersea children and the unexpected places from which she drew inspiration for Dr. Eleven's spacesuit. We also learn how she approaches characters' looks as they evolve in a storyline and the challenges of costuming a show in the middle of a real-life pandemic.
