1930s Warsaw. After learning that her former client Zuzanna was assaulted and subsequently died, Helena is moved into action by struggles within her own marriage. Meanwhile, Zuzanna's brother Emil begins to probe the life his sister kept hidden.

While Emil faces charges for his sister's death, Helena becomes the subject of a city-wide scandal and begins to investigate Honest Jan.

When a fire breaks out at the paper, Helena faces increased scrutiny from the public - and Emil. While another woman falls prey to Honest Jan, Ewa receives devastating news, and Maks conspires to ensure his wife complies with his demands.

While Ewa takes matters into her own hands, Helena faces her own battles with Maks. Later, Emil learns more about his sister's case, and a distraught Helena attempts to help Hanka.

As the cops close in on Maks, Helena struggles to keep the paper out of Denar's control. Later, Róża preys on Helena's opium addiction in a bid to obscure the truth.

After an overdose lands Helena in the hospital, Róża pushes Maks towards having his wife committed. Later, the accused has his day in court, leading Emil towards a fateful decision.
