  • 2008 World Series, Game 1: Phillies at Rays
    EPISODE 1
2008 World Series, Game 1: Phillies at Rays
October 22nd, 2008: Philadelphia Phillies 3 at Tamba Bay Rays 2 F -- Enduring deafening cowbell sounds clanging off Tropicana Field's walls Wednesday night, the Phillies still managed to hear echoes of 1980. Bringing their own rhythm to the 2008 World Series, notably the beating of the ball off Chase Utley's lumber and the hollow slicing of air waving at Cole Hamels' changeup, the Phillies squeaked out a 3-2 win over the Rays in Game 1 of the Fall Classic. So began a quest for Philadelphia that can end successfully with just three more wins. The Phillies recorded their 100th win of 2008 and need what they hope will be a truly grand total 103 to claim their first World Series title since '80. When the Series continues with Thursday's Game 2 at Tropicana Field, history is on the Phils' side, as 10 of the past 11 Game 1 victors have gone on to take the World Series.

    EPISODE 2
2008 World Series, Game 2: Phillies at Rays
October 24th, 2008: Philadelphia Phillies 2 at Tampa Bay Rays 4 F -- James Shields backed up his "Big Game James" moniker in Game 2, leading the Rays to a big victory vs. the Phillies at Tropicana Field. Thanks to the righty's strong outing and the Tampa Bay lineup's collective work against Philadelphia starter Brett Myers, the World Series is now even. Shields held the Phillies scoreless for 5 2/3 innings. Shields struck out four and scattered seven hits. The Series now shifts to Philadelphia for Games 3, 4 and 5 after an off-day on Friday.

  • 2008 World Series, Game 3: Rays at Phillies
    EPISODE 3
2008 World Series, Game 3: Rays at Phillies
October 25th, 2008: Tampa Bay Rays 4 at Philadelphia Phillies 5 F -- When the rain stopped and the night sky cleared, the Phillies produced World Series thunder. The pot of gold at the end of this October rainbow sits two wins away for the Phillies, after an emotional, 5-4 walk-off win over the Rays in Game 3. The early Sunday morning triumph secured a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Fall Classic. No one was tired after a game that ended at 1:47 a.m. ET, or even realized what time it was. "At one point, there was that one song, 'After Midnight,'" Ryan Howard said at 2:30 a.m. in an emptying Phillies clubhouse. "That was the first time I thought about the time. I thought, it must be after midnight, but my body didn't feel like it was that late." The Phillies didn't look tired jumping around the infield after one of the more amazing finishes to a World Series game -- a bases-loaded, ninth-inning dribbler off the bat of Carlos Ruiz that traveled 30 feet down the third-base line to end the soggy night. It scored Eric Bruntlett -- whose journey to third is a hustling tale in itself -- for a win in the team's first World Series game in Philadelphia since 1993. It was the first walk-off infield single in World Series history.

  • 2008 World Series, Game 4: Rays at Phillies
    EPISODE 4
2008 World Series, Game 4: Rays at Phillies
October 26th, 2008: Tampa Bay Rays 2 at Philadelphia Phillies 10 F -- The sight of Joe Blanton's surprising but fitting home run stomp spoke to the theme: The 2008 World Series has skewed heavily in Philadelphia's favor. Sunday night's 10-2 walloping of Tampa Bay in Game 4 rocked Citizens Bank Park and placed the Phillies one win away the big trophy. Somewhere amid the scent of frying cheesesteaks is the pleasant aroma of the franchise's second World Series championship. "Championships don't just roll through town every year or every other year," said Jamie Moyer, who knows a thing or two about the wait, playing in his first World Series at age 45. "We're going to appreciate it if we get there, but we have to win another baseball game. Hopefully, it happens."
