John Wesley

John Wesley grew up in Louisiana during the 1940s and 1950s before setting out to California to begin his acting career in the early 1960s. His career started with a few TV appearances in shows such as "My Three Sons" (ABC/CBS 1960-1972) and "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." (NBC 1964-68). His film acting debut was in the Clint Eastwood western "Hang 'Em High" (1968) and thriller "Uptight" (1968). But by the time the '60s ended, Wesley was off serving his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He returned to resume his acting career at the end of the war, once again carving out one-off performances on television shows. His first major role was as Sweets Walker in the short-lived movie sequel series "Dirty Dancing" (CBS 1988-89). Arguably his most memorable roles were just on the horizon, though, as he appeared as Dr. Hoover on the Will Smith vehicle "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" (NBC 1990-96). He followed that up with an appearance in the Sylvester Stallone comedy "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot" (1992). The mid-'90s brought more recurring roles, including Mr. Jim on "Martin" (Fox 1992-97) and on the animated kids show "Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad" (ABC 1994-95). While the rest of his acting career didn't feature anything as consistent or notable as his '90s run, Wesley was a regular among bit parts on TV shows and film. In September 2019, he passed away at the age of 72 following a battle with cancer.
