In June 1942, the Frank family hastens its plan to go into hiding from the Nazis.

In October 1942, the two families worry when a plumber is called to fix their broken toilet; Anne tries to adjust to life with the Van Daan family; a new arrival to the attic may change the atmosphere.

Otto is shocked to discover that the building has been sold; everyone fears that the new owner will demand access to the annex; Miep informs the hiders that their grocer is missing, and they fear he might betray them to the Nazis.

Anne dreams of a birthday celebration from the past, only to awaken and realize that her 14th birthday is going to be a much more modest affair.
