Widow Norma Bates and her shy teenage son, Norman, seek a fresh start in a coastal town filled with secrets; the arrival of an unexpected guest turns the Bates' lives upside down.

Dylan Bates, Norma's older son from a previous marriage, arrives in town - much to the family's displeasure - and Norman spends more time with Emma. Meanwhile, he is with another friend, Bradley, at a bus stop when they witness her father have a car accident and discover he is badly burned. Starring Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga.

Norman escapes from Deputy Sheriff Zach Shelby's house with the help of his brother Dylan, who creates a diversion - but the girl he found in the basement is left behind. He tells his mother what has happened but she does not believe him.

Having spent the night with Bradley, a contented Norman returns home to find that his mother is in jail, arrested for the murder of Keith Summers. Her bail is set at $100,000 but she refuses her sons' offer to help her.

Dylan takes drastic action after Shelby holds the Bates family at gunpoint, and Norma reveals the truth about her husband's death - and the part Norman played in it.
