After many years, Beowulf returns to Herot to say goodbye to its leader and his former guardian Hrothgar.

Thanes from across the Shieldlands gather for an intertribal election; Beowulf is pressured to locate an enemy who may be closer than he ever imagined.

Beowulf and Rate ride into the forest to search for Slean and Thane Scorann; Rheda comes under pressure with her bid for leadership dependent on Scorann's vote.

Rheda loses some of her closest allies as she attempts to prevent a civil war; Slean's loyalties become conflicted; Beowulf and his gang undertake a mission to cement Rheda's position of power.
