Bud Buckwald and Ernesto Gonzalez live in a town on the United States-Mexico border; Bud works as a border guard and takes his job very seriously; in this small town the lives of the two families inevitably become intertwined.

Bud Buckwald, a border patrol agent, is furious when he learns that his daughter is engaged to J.C., his neighbour's nephew; a new anti-immigration law could lead to J.C.'s deportation.

Bud uses confiscated drug money from a crashed smuggling aeroplane to fund and build a giant border wall between the US and Mexico, but when it destroys the economy and costs him his job, he quickly rethinks his idea and starts smuggling immigrants.

The reverend of Bud's megachurch wants Bud to recruit Ernesto in a bid to collect more money from the growing Mexican population; while Ernesto is initially enchanted by the megachurch's beauty, Maria finds it very annoying.

Bud takes over as the head coach of the high school football team and finds a secret weapon to succeed, an illegal immigrant who ends up becoming Mexico's top drug mule.

The Mexifornia population tips from white majority to Latino majority when Maria's sister has a baby, so Bud attempts to redress the balance by having sex with Janice.

When Ernesto forces J.C. to work on his crew, J.C. is appalled by the working conditions and goes on strike, causing a rift in the Gonzalez family; an ostrich stalks Bud.
