Harry Selfridge arrives in London from Chicago in 1908, with a grand plan to open the finest department store in the world. The road to the grand opening isn't always smooth as Harry's business partner pulls out.
Selfridge's is open but is missing customers. Harry worries as he knows he needs to capture the imagination of London to get some much-needed publicity. Ellen Love gives Harry an idea.
Harry's latest idea is to create a beauty counter at the front of the store that sells perfume and make-up, much to the consternation of some of his staff.
Harry wins a major publicity coup when prima ballerina Anna Pavlova agrees to visit the store. Agnes' job comes under threat as Reg crashes the special event.
Harry is delighted with the motor car he's had brought in for a new window display. Roddy surprises Rose at home, where he is spotted by young Beatrice. Harry visits Agnes to persuade her to come back to the store.
Harry is left unconscious after his car accident and suffers flashbacks to an event from his childhood. The store anxiously awaits news.
