Walter Proska, a Wehrmacht soldier from Poland, is on his way home during the summer as the war draws to a close. But in a strange turn of events sends him back to the front.

Kürschner asks Proska to do something against the rules and to go with him to the partisans. During Proska's patrol, he runs into an acquaintance who makes his situation even more complex.
