Bill Hunter

Legendary Australian actor Bill Hunter has worked with a variety of notable directors over a career that has spanned more than 50 years. They include such antipodean luminaries as Peter Weir, Baz Luhrman, and George Miller. Hunter started his career working extensively in Australian television dramas, while also showing up on British ("Doctor Who") and American ("Dynasty") shows. Hunter's prolific film career began in 1970, when he appeared in the bushranger drama "Ned Kelly," starring Mick Jagger. In 1981 he landed his breakthrough role as an Army commander in Peter Weir's critically acclaimed "Gallipoli," starring a alongside a young Mel Gibson. Hunter later portrayed ballroom-dancing tyrant Barry Fife in Baz Luhrman's loony hit "Strictly Ballroom." Two years later Hunter appeared in another sleeper hit, "Muriel's Wedding," as the stern father of the ABBA-loving title character. Later that same year Hunter starred as a mechanic alongside cross-dressers Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, and Terence Stamp in the cult road-movie "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert."
