The U.S. Army recruits Bat after several enraged Indian tribes accuse white men of abducting their women and children; Bat must find the culprits before a war breaks out.

Bat helps a woman and her son break away from the Doolin gang and flee to St. Louis, but the boy feels a strong attachment to the criminals that he considers family.

Bat agrees to accompany a widow to a governor's reception as her bodyguard, but someone steals the widow's diamond jewelry on the day of the event.
