Kavan Smith

Kavan Smith was best known for his portrayal of Major Lorne in "Stargate SG-1" (Showtime 1997-2002 / Sci-Fi 2002-2008) and "Stargate Atlantis" (Sci-Fi 2004-2009). Kavan Joel Smith was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Smith's passion for the theatrics blossomed early; he and a friend sometimes skipped class to record and rehearse skits they wrote. Although he initially enrolled at the University of Calgary for a degree in economics, Smith realized his true calling was acting and transferred to Mount Royal University's performing arts program. After he graduated, Smith landed a lead role in the Canadian-made television series "Destiny Ridge" (Syndicated 1993). He continued to appear in various made-for-TV movies and eventually caught the eye of director Brian De Palma, who cast him in the sci-fi movie "Mission to Mars" (2000). After that, Smith gravitated towards other roles in science fiction settings. He appeared in the updated versions of "The Outer Limits" (Showtime 1995-2000 / Sci-Fi 2001-02) and "The Twilight Zone" (UPN 2002), the Superman origin story "Smallville" (WB 2001-06 / CW 2006-2011), and "Battlestar Galactica" (Sci-Fi 2004-09). In 2003, Smith was cast as Major Evan Lorne in an episode of the science fiction series "Stargate SG-1." The writers of the show had no plans to expand his role beyond the singular episode but somehow Major Lorne surprisingly developed into fan-favorite character. Four years later, Smith returned as Major Lorne near the end of the show's run and the show's creators made him a recurring figure in the spin-off "Stargate Atlantis." In that time period, Smith continued to land roles in genre television shows, such as his portrayal of Agent Jed Garrity in USA Network's sci-fi drama "The 4400" (2004-07). In 2013, Smith took on the role of Tom Travis, a man who found out his wife was a double agent, for DirecTV's Audience Network series "Rogue" (2013-).
