Wars Against Saddam

The Middle East, as we know it and many of the countries we recognize in that region, did not exist when the First World War began in 1914; this is the story of the Middle East from the Kingdom of Persia, the Ottoman Empire.

The Iran-Iraq War began in September 1980. Lasting eight years made it the 20th century's longest conventional war. It followed a long history of border disputes and fears that the Iranian Revolution would inspire insurgency among Iraq's Shia majority.

The Air campaign of the 1991 Gulf War began with extensive aerial bombing to shape the battlefield. The aerial strike force was made up of over 2,250 combat aircraft which included 1,800 U.S. aircraft with over 100,000 sorties flown.
