Dorothea Kruse, in her twenty fifth week of pregnancy, is admitted to the Sachsenklinik after fainting. Dr. Peters diagnoses an incurable brain tumor, but Doro refuses treatment. Her husband Stefan pleads with her to try therapy for the sake of their unborn child. At the same time, the search for a new chief physician begins, and Martin Stein believes he is the perfect candidate.

Carmen Esser comes to the Sachsenklinik with back pain, where Dr. Martin Stein diagnoses a herniated disc. Her husband Ulrich is absorbed in his work and rarely pays attention to her. When her condition worsens, he suddenly becomes caring and attentive, but his support ends when he leaves for Brussels. Hurt and disappointed, Carmen refuses to take her medication.

Eighteen-year-old environmental activist Hannes plans to join a blockade against factory farming, but his mother Ines delays the trip. During a heated argument in the car, Hannes grabs the steering wheel and causes an accident. At the Sachsenklinik, Dr. Roland Heilmann treats his fractured upper arm. Ines claims she is uninjured, but the conflict between them continues to grow.

Maike Bender brings her son Luis to the Sachsenklinik because of stomach pain, but Philipp Brentano cannot find the cause. The next morning they return, and the pain has become worse. Even after another examination by Kathrin Globisch, there is still no clear diagnosis. Philipp begins to suspect that Maike may be suffering from Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

Industrial climber Mario Grimm falls and breaks his shoulder. During surgery he suffers cardiac arrhythmia, and Martin Stein diagnoses acromegaly. Mario refuses a lifesaving operation because he cannot imagine a future without his job. At the same time, nurse Hans Peter Brenner wants to begin his practical year and must find someone to replace him.

After fifty years of marriage, Christel and Fritz Wusthoff decide to end their lives together because Christel’s cancer has advanced. Their plan to poison themselves with insecticide fails, and both are admitted to the Sachsenklinik. Philipp Brentano suspects Fritz has suffered a stroke. Christel needs surgery on her leg, and when Fritz regains consciousness, he feels deep despair.
