Sami, a German-Egyptian tax consultant from Bielefeld, has been trying to cope with life since his Jette left him. While he looks after their teenage daughter Isa, who is more than committed to environmental protection, he wants to win back Jette's heart and their joint shop "Tattoos & Taxes." This costs money, so he takes on a job with the restaurant owner Suma, who only employs devout Muslims. Sami, who broke with Islam and his family years ago, sees no other way out and plays along. Easier said than done, his white lie leads to a reunion with his father, an imam. Thus begins Sami's turbulent journey to his roots in which neither his family nor Sami himself can be sure exactly where their path will take them.
