In this series debut Housewife Nancy Botwin is widowed and turns to dealing marijuana to support her two sons while also attempting to keep her image in the picturesque suburb of Agrestic. Meanwhile her neighbour - PTA mother Celia Hodes tries to catch her daughter Quinn in the act with Nancy's son Silas and finds out more than she bargained for...

Celia meets with a faith healer to treat her breast cancer and begins to give away belongings. Andy wants in on Nancy's business, but when she rejects the idea he holds a private meeting with Conrad to set up his own business.

A near-bust by the DEA rattles Heylia, who pressures Nancy to make things right between them; Celia's torrid affair with Doug continues; Andy's crazy ex-girlfriend Kat (guest star Zooey Deschanel) arrives unannounced from Alaska.

Nancy makes her first successful smuggling run across the border with both drugs and human cargo. Meanwhile, Captain Till strikes a deal with Celia to get her out of jail. In return, she must gather evidence to incriminate Nancy and Guillermo. Back in Ren Mar, Andy tries to convince the family, including his father, to put Bubbie out of her misery.

In an effort to make money and stay 'under the radar Nancy Andy and Silas acquire scab laborer jobs at an upscale Seattle hotel. Meanwhile Shane is left to care for baby Stevie. Back at Ren Mar Doug finds unexpected guests.

After doing three years hard time Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) is abruptly released from Federal Prison and transferred to a halfway house in New York City. Meanwhile Andy (Justin Kirk) Silas (Hunter Parrish) Shane (Alexander Gould) and Doug (Kevin Nealon) who have all spent the last three years in Copenhagen are informed by Jill Price-Gray (Jennifer Jason Leigh) of Nancy's release.
