Burgundian warrior Hagen of Tronje holds the crisis-ridden kingdom together through his dedication and unyielding harshness; in doing so, he suppresses his adoration of the king’s daughter Kriemhild and represses his own dark past.

Gunter instructs his men to let the unknown warriors into Worms; Hagen notes that one of their parties is the Dark Elf, Alberich; their leader is Siegfried of Xanten, a charismatic and mighty swordsman who, according to legend, killed the last dragon.
