Life Below Zero

After months recovering from her injury in town, Sue Aikens returns to Kavik and must deal with the damage of four months away from home. The Hailstone family sets up their camp for the summer along the Kiwalik River. In Nenana, Jessie Holmes repairs his boat for the summer fishing season ahead. And Glenn Villeneuve hunts for small springtime game in the Brooks Range.

In Kiwalik, the Hailstones construct a rack that will hang the season’s hunting and fishing catch. In Nenana, Jessie Holmes races to complete his smokehouse to take advantage of the summer salmon run. In Chandalar, Glenn Villeneuve searches for a long lost cabin that may contain valuable supplies. And in Kavik, Sue Aikens works hard to reopen camp for her first clients of the thaw.

In Kiwalik, the Hailstones cross the ocean to pick up a new motor and boat in Deering to help them harvest salmon. In Nenana, Jessie Holmes rushes to get his fish wheel fully operational for the summer salmon run. In Iliamna, Erik Salitan flies to a remote area to embark on a black bear hunt. And in Kavik, Sue Aikens must refill her freezer for the long winter ahead.

Glenn Villeneuve uses his newly recovered canoe to explore unfamiliar regions of the Brooks Range. In Kavik, Sue Aikens overhauls her heating system to work more efficiently. Agnes Hailstone teaches her daughters how to fish for herring along the Kiwalik River. And in Eagle, Andy Bassich sets nets for king salmon before the window to harvest the valuable resource closes for the season.

With the last of the longer days coming to an end, the Alaskans must travel through unfamiliar territories and stockpile resources before the waterways freeze, winter's dark, and brutal conditions overtake the land.

From scouting for resources in sub-zero temperatures, to hiking the countryside in search of food - those who dwell on the frontier of the Arctic must do whatever is in their power to secure their homesteads for the cold that lies ahead.
