Sister Lucía returns to her homeland, Barbate, after a decade and soon discovers the tough reality that her family is facing day to day. Her brother Miguel is an unemployed fisherman, her sister-in-law Antonia is about to lose her job, and her older nephew Rafa is now the leader of a drug trafficking gang. She tries to turn Rafa away, not thinking about the risks she will have to face. However, the situation worsens when she discovers that Bruno, her first love, is one of the local drug bosses… and Rafa’s main rival in this dark business.

Lucía discovers that Bruno is now a criminal, as well as being Rafa’s main rival in the local drug gang war. Lieutenant Menendez’s daughter Paula is entering a new, dangerous relationship with Rafa. Lario, Bruno’s right-hand man, sees that Bruno is overwhelmed by Lucía’s return and makes a decision without getting the green light from him. Lario decides to find some allies in Bruno’s family, as his mother is trying to hide the real reason why Lucía devoted her life to God and left the town years ago. Lucía receives an attractive offer to promote inside the congregation if she moves away again. Lucía will have to face a personal dilemma, but nothing will prevent the truth being partially discovered by Bruno.

Bruno’s men hurt Rafa. Lucía takes care of her nephew in order to gain his trust. Bruno confesses to Lucía that her sudden disappearance a decade ago caused him a lot of pain, which awakens Lucía’s feelings again. Lieutenant Menendez discovers the relationship between his daughter and Rafa and tries to threaten him… with no success. Paula puts some boundaries on their relationship, ordering Rafa to stay away from crime, but he isn't willing to give up the drug business yet. Lucía discovers that Rafa is traveling to Morocco in search of a client and decides to follow him. She will have to face risks to prevent Rafa from getting arrested.

Lario keeps provoking arguments against Bruno, aiming to show his weaknesses to their business' partners. The Mexicans discover how dangerous Rafa is and want to have him eliminated. Rafa and Paula continue their relationship despite knowing that Paula’s father doesn't approve of it. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Menendez tries to gain Bruno’s trust and gatecrash the gang. Bruno declares his love to Lucía and she asks him for help to get Rafa out of the drug business. Bruno convinces her that the only way is having him imprisoned, but the trap will have an unexpected and tragic result.

Miguel's death shatters Lucía’s plans. Rafa blames Bruno for his father’s death and swears revenge on him. Antonia publicly disowns Rafa, making him aware of who his biological parents are. Lucía stops any relationship with Bruno and tries to explain to Rafa the reasons why she left, but her son does not want to hear it. Bruno demands that Lario turns himself in to the police after Miguel’s murder, but Lorena manages to get a false criminal to confess. Bruno’s partners challenge each other, making the situation even worse. Rafa deceives Bruno and captures him in order to avenge his father’s death.

Rafa is unable to kill Bruno, so he decides to give up on the drug gang and leave Barbate. Before leaving, he uses Rojo’s money to reflate the cannery. Lucía convinces the fake criminal to withdraw himself so that Bruno realizes Lorena and Lario have betrayed him. Yusef travels to Spain to repatriate his son's body, who was killed after the war between the Mexicans and the Arabs. Bruno is forced to play both sides of the fence and begins preparing a large cocaine operation with the Mexicans. Rafa and Paula plan to run away but get kidnapped by Lario. Bruno discovers the truth about Rafa.
