Nick investigates the case of a baby stolen from its pram outside a shop. The prime suspects are a group of hippies who were close nearby, however, the child's grandmother is also under suspicion. Meanwhile, Kate is treating a woman who is driven to despair by her inability to conceive.

With Lynley suspended, Havers is assigned a new partner - the heavily pregnant, no nonsense Fiona Knight. They investigate the murder of a woman whose body was found in a local lake, and Lynley has a hard time staying on the sidelines.
