Magnus, sent on an errand to Switzerland, meets two men who will be important in his life as a spy as he finds himself recruited to observe politically active left-wing students.

In the years between 1953 and 1959, Magnus betrays his father Rick and renews his acquaintance with Axel.

Pym finds himself being recruited by the British Foreign Office and sent to Europe on various secret assignments before he marries and forms a partnership with Axel.

With Magnus Pym working in Washington with Axel, the heads of British and US intelligence argue over his loyalty. As Jack Brotherhood doggedly defends him, Magnus finds sanctuary in a remote seaside town in England.

On hearing of Rick's death, Pym and Mary return to Vienna. Pym then rushes off to England but fails to return to Vienna as planned.
