As Time Goes By

After a chance encounter, two ex-lovers meet once more after a 38 year separation, only to discover that a lost letter was all that kept them apart.

Another secretary, Sandy, arrives at the hotel to help Lionel with his book revisions only to find that he has checked out. Lionel eventually goes to see Jean and is reluctantly convinced to go to a party being hosted by Alistair.

Lionel is about to go on a lecture circuit, so he invites Jean for a day out. The revisit some old haunts, only to discover that a lot has changed. However, after a trek through an overgrown field, they find `The Copper Kettle', an old place which Lionel and Jean were quite fond of.

Jean and Judy decide to pay Lionel a surprise visit while he lectures at a conference in Norwich, but the surprise is not a very welcome one and Jean finds Lionel staying with another woman.

After their visit to Norwich, it becomes clear that Alistair is in love with Jean, not Judy. Meanwhile, Jean aims to get back at Lionel for what happened at the lecture.

Realising how absurd it is that Judy and Alistair have feelings for Jean and Lionel instead of each other, the elders plan a picnic to show them that they are meant to be together.
