Renowned anchorman Chuck Darling returns to his Pittsburgh news room roots, and his consistent off-screen quarreling with his former co-anchor, Kelly Carr. After an embarrassing on-air tirade ends up on the internet, national newsreading celebrity Chuck Darling finds his brilliant career suddenly on the slide. Back in his old stomping ground of Pittsburgh he discovers his former co-anchor of ten years ago has moved on a bit.

Kelly seriously doubts whether Chuck is responsible enough or has adequate sense to take care of a child, so when Chuck is given a goldfish for a pet, he's determined to show he's got what it takes. In order to do this, he gets the help of the news director Ryan.

Chuck and Kelly are getting on each other's nerves like never before - both on and off-camera, but when Chuck runs into Kelly and daughter Gracie having dinner at a restaurant, he awkwardly joins them for a meal and lo and behold, Chuck and Gracie hit it off. Despite herself Kelly realises that having Chuck around might not be so terrible after all.

Chuck's former colleagues are town for a convention, and in an attempt to impress them he tries to arrange things so that he is covering the lead story in the evening's main news broadcast. However, Kelly is unwilling to give up the most important item, and strongly resists his efforts to manipulate her.

When Chuck turns down a dinner invitation from Ryan, Kelly accuses him of being rude and selfish. Chuck retaliates by calling Kelly uptight, so she accompanies Montana on a wild night out on the town to negate her stuffy image. Meanwhile, Gary has to deal with Marsh when they start carpooling together to work.

It all goes a bit haywire at WURG when Gracie's school class make a field trip to the station. Kelly informs Chuck that Gracie has a bully at school and they each have a method of dealing with it. Marsh must prove his will power to Gary while not crying during a children's story, and Montana gets shown up by a young girl in Gracie's school.
