Along with many of his comrades, Koen has been killed by the Containment Authority in their brutal clampdown on `The Zone'. Jarrod Slade intends to experiment on his body, but Koen's regenerative powers are even stronger than he realised.

Waruu relishes his new responsibilities working for Slade and the government - he and Slade force Boondee to become the first public victim of `the process'. Slade, unbeknownst to Waruu, is perfecting work on a substance that could destroy Koen.

Waruu begins accepting volunteers for his new procedure to reintegrate Hairies into society. Boondee becomes the public face of the process, having been forcibly subjected to it, and is released back into the community. Charlotte leaves Jarrod.

After escaping Waruu, Koen has learned what he is up against: Waruu will stop at nothing to destroy Koen and take power. He confronts Linda about their past and she has no excuses, but Koen has no one else to turn to in the dark days ahead.

Koen faces Waruu again, more powerful than before. Nerida, having escaped from the Containment Authority, also tracks Waruu down and confronts him. But he will not release their daughter into Nerida's care. Araluen and Boondee must make a decision.

Alinta, after some help from Tim, suddenly has an opportunity to escape Waruu's clutches. Waruu is preoccupied with his problems at the Ministry of Human Safety, having failed to hand them Koen, he is in danger of seeing his efforts crumble to dust.
