The crime drama follows the personal and professional life of police surgeon Dr Paul Dangerfield, a widowed father who relocates from London to Warwickshire following the death of his wife in a car crash. As he balances raising teenagers Alison and Marty, Dangerfield blends medical cases at the clinic where he works with his police cases, under the watchful eyes of DI Ken Jackson, DS Helen Diamond and DI Frank Dagley. In between, the dashing doc finds time to romance feisty barrister Kate Durrani and, on a longer-term basis, medical colleague Dr Joanna Stevens. Originally starring Nigel Le Vaillant as Dangerfield, the series' central character shifted in series five to Dr Jonathan Paige (Nigel Havers) after Le Vaillant's departure.
