After being expelled, 17-year-old Erik moves to prestigious boarding school Stjernsberg. He hopes for a new start but soon discovers the school's nasty underbelly.

Erik's impatience and sharp tongue earn him his first injunction from the seniors council and a firm enemy in a senior student. But he has the solace of a budding romance when Marja invites him to a dance.

As Erik begins the Duel, a flashback reveals how he gained his bleak knowledge and his desire for change from his violent past in Stockholm. But Erik's reactions under pressure shock everyone.

Erik's convinced he'll be expelled, but the Council are worried about scrutiny. Marja makes her own plans to leave after learning of Erik's action. Pierre tries to find out more about Erik.

Marja saves Erik from Silverhielm's latest punishment, but when the headmaster learns of their relationship, Stjernsberg must decide on Erik's place at the school. Silverhielm thinks he has finally broken Erik.
