In 1971, President Nixon announced the end of the dollar's convertibility to gold, turning the world's economic system upside down. Yet the dollar remained the world's safe haven currency and retained its privilege. Could China change this American hegemony?

The CFA franc, born of French colonisation of Africa, is a good example of an imposed currency. Conversely, local currencies - currencies of choice - would represent the ability of citizens to produce and manage a currency for their own benefit.
