Rebus

When the body of a missing prostitute is found, Rebus is haunted by a case from 20 years before. The killer was never found, but Rebus remained convinced that rich kid Daniel Raeburn was responsible. Now a respectable Edinburgh MSP, Daniel protests his innocence. As Templer and the team close in on prime suspect Martin Cowan, Rebus doggedly pursues Raeburn and discovers that gut instincts are sometimes open to interpretation.

News arrives of a shooting at a posh school. Two boys are dead, one seriously injured and the PE teacher, ex-SAS man Lee Hartman, lies with a hole in his head and a gun in his hand in the same room. Rebus is troubled by inconsistencies at the crime scene, but his position is difficult - one of the dead boys is family. Unable to resist continuing with his own investigation, he becomes unhealthily obsessed by Hartman's world.

On the eve of a conference on African poverty, the Chair - millionaire philanthropist and people's champion Gregor Jack - is found with a prostitute during a brothel raid. Then his wife Liz is discovered dead in a river and he becomes a murder suspect. Rebus embarks on a journey into the mind and murky past of her super-rich husband.

Rebus finds himself at the centre of a massive chemical cover up, when he investigates a small-time crook's apparent suicide. The more he uncovers about the atrocity, the less the people in power appear to want to hear, placing him in an awkward position.

An act of insubordination sees Rebus sent back to police college to take an occupational therapy course. Meanwhile, the body of a gallery owner is found dumped in a bin liner on Calton Hill. Siobhan is assigned the case in Rebus' absence, and quickly uncovers the involvement of two corrupt police officers in the murder. Making his return, Rebus gets close to exposing their indiscretions.

Rebus investigates when the moderator-elect of the Scottish church is found with his throat cut, naked in a car, next to a female passenger in a similar state - and in an area notorious for being used by lovers. The woman's jealous husband is initially considered the prime suspect, but when one of the rival candidates for the moderator position is also found, the plot thickens.
