Scarlet and Black

Julien Sorel, a poor but ambitious son of a humble carpenter, is chosen for his skill in Latin to tutor the children of the local mayor.

At the seminary, Julien is quick to ingratiate himself with Priest Abbê Picard. He believes he has been abandoned by his lover, Madame de Rênal, but her letters have been intercepted.

Mathilde is one of the biggest matrimonial prizes in Paris, and the Marquis has already lined up a suitable suitor. Whilst at the best ball in town many admirers are keen of her affection.

Mathilde is showing signs of weakness. The Marquis is furious to learn of Mathilde and Julien’s plan to marry. Enraged at Julien’s mistrust he is banished from his home. The chances of the Marquis ever agreeing to their marriage are nil and when he learns of Mathilde’s pregnancy, he pretends to give in, arranging a military position for Julien to get rid of him "while the wedding is arranged". Instead the Marquis contacts Madame de Rênal who writes to Mathilde exposing Julien as an unprincipled and immoral seducer. Enraged at being exposed Julien sets out to find Madame de Rênal.
