A black family moves from their North Carolina home to an all-white Los Angeles neighbourhood in 1953.

Henry goes to work, Ruby goes to school, and Lucky and Gracie go to the hardware store. Later, Lucky bakes a pie.

Henry surprises the girls, Lucky goes to Hazel's, Betty makes an impression, and Lucky takes the bus.

Lucky visits Helen, and Henry gets good news. Meanwhile, Ruby and Doris share a secret, and Lucky meets Ella Mae.

Helen goes to work while the Emorys leave North Carolina.

Lucky does Gracie's hair, Henry has a beer with a new friend, Ruby tries out, and Betty phones a friend.
