The first film follows a boxer's dramatic saga in edgy black and white; the second, in color, is a throwback to the golden days of the musical comedy. Very familiar with both genres, Donen gives these stories the edge that most satire directors would miss. The cast, including George C. Scott, does double duty by playing roles in both films.
