Robert E. Sherwood

Intelligent, witty film critic and editor of the original LIFE magazine of the 1920s, motion picture editor of the NEW YORK HERALD and three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright ("Idiot's Delight," "Abe Lincoln in Illinois" and "There Shall Be No Night") whose plays were frequently adapted for film (such as the thrice-filmed "Waterloo Bridge" and "Petrified Forest"). Sherwood also co-wrote screenplays for such films as "The Scarlet Pimpernel" (1935), "The Divorce of Lady X" (1938), "Rebecca" (1940) and "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946) for which he won an Oscar.
