Robert Lieberman

Robert Lieberman is a director who specializes in the science fiction genre, though he has directed and produced other sorts of television shows and films. One of his best known works, "Fire in the Sky," was based on the story of an alien abduction and co-starred James Garner. The film became a cult classic amongst sci-fi enthusiasts and was particularly noted by critics as well to be very realistic, especially the alien abduction scenes. For the Syfy channel, Lieberman also directed the 2004 TV movie "Earthsea," loosely based on a series of novels about a mythical land with dragons, sorcerers, and other magical beings. Though it was for the USA Network, Lieberman also directed and produced a number of episodes for the science fiction thriller "Stephen King's Dead Zone," about a man, played by Anthony Michael Hall, who is struck with psychic abilities after coming out of a coma and uses them to solve crimes. The plot borrows the basic premise from the 1979 Stephen King novel, though the series takes the story even further as the episodes unfold. One high-profile project for Lieberman that fell outside his usual genre was "D3: The Mighty Ducks," the third and final film in "The Mighty Ducks" trilogy, all starring Emilio Estevez. Lieberman was at one time married to actress Marilu Henner, and produced her short-lived talk show, called "Marilu," during this period. Rob Lieberman died on July 1, 2023 in Los Angeles, CA at the age of 75.
