Norwegian widower of Iranian descent Marwan kidnaps his five-year-old daughter, Kiki, from his in-laws' care and attempts to flee the country. Accompanied by his childhood friend Adil, he eventually finds refuge on a farm in the Telemark region.

Adil gets a job at the village school and bonds with a young policewoman; Khabib forms an unbreakable bond with Kiki; Tariq must manage his uncle's sheepfold.

Tariq finalises the grant application for a sheepfold; Khabib takes his role as Kiki's guardian seriously; Adil and Marwan return from Oslo with Adil's sister, Anisa.

Tariq and Khabib struggle to replace the lost fertiliser; Marwan is overwhelmed by the past.

When the day of chemical delivery arrives, the neighbourhood troubles mount; Ingeborg is jealous of Anisa, whom she mistakes for Adil's wife; Oline, a farmer, envies Tariq for having won the grant.

When a halal cheese factory is established on the farm, Oline is put in charge of its production, and Marwan is in charge of its management; the religious certification of a product requires Khabib to seek the help of his brother Issam, an imam.
