Young Gon must prove his ability to his aunt Mito before he's allowed to follow in his father's footsteps and take the Hunter Exam.

On their way to take the Hunter Exam, Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika must pass an old woman's test and answer a question correctly.

Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio arrive at the exam site in Zaban City and are led to a restaurant's back room. No one knows what the first phase of the test will be.

Leorio and Kurapika run together in the first phase of the exam and talk about why they want to become Hunters.

The candidates exit the long tunnel and find themselves in the middle of a misty wetlands, where they're attacked by monsters.

The second phase of the exam is a cooking test, much to the candidates' surprise. Examiner Menchi is made to participate as well.
