The surgical staff tries to be optimistic as a young woman clings to life after a brutal attack. Meanwhile Meredith puts her career on the line to save a newborn in the hospital nursery, and the other interns learn that it takes more than just medical knowledge to be good at their jobs.

Nick hurts his back playing touch football and Jess discovers that he doesn't have medical insurance. She takes him to see her doctor friend Sadie, even though Sadie is an obstetrician. During the examination, Sadie discovers that Nick may have a more serious underlying medical problem. Jess rallies the gang to help keep Nick's spirits up, but he can't avoid considering his own mortality while he waits for his test results.

When Luke agrees to build sets for the elementary school's production of `Fiddler on the Roof', he knows that Lorelai is the costume designer and hopes that their paths will cross.
