Nan Cooley naively takes the blame for the murder her stepfather Pop committed, trusting the mob to arrange her release. While Nan is in prison, Pop recruits her boyfriend, a circus sharpshooter known as The Kid, into his bootlegging racket. When Nan gets out, she wants nothing more to do with the underworld, but The Kid is in deep.
