By Suzhou River in Shanghai, there was a man called Mardar who made a living by delivering on motorcycle. One day, he took a new job which was to pick up a teenage girl Moudan routinely every week to her relative's home. Day by day, they began to have feelings for each other and fell deeply in love. However, Mardar was actually with a pack of gangsters, and they had been planning a kidnapping using the girl as hostage against her dad. So angry and disappointed, Moudan ran away and said, "If I jumped into the river, I would become a mermaid and come back to find you."
