Belle goes on a second date with Alex, as a "real" girlfriend - a situation Belle is unsure how to navigate. Later, she sees regular client Matt who always requests the professional "girlfriend experience" - a role that is much easier for her because the rules are so much clearer. When Matt leaves, there is a buzz at the door and Belle is confronted by his angry wife. This confrontation leaves her distraught, leading her to abruptly give up on pursuing a "real" relationship with Alex. When she goes to break up with him, he talks her out of it and she decides to throw caution to the wind.

When DI Alex Drake is shot and lands in 1981, she comes face-to-face with DCI Gene Hunt, the relic of old fashioned policing she’d read about in Sam Tyler’s reports. Alex thinks she is in a coma and needs Hunt’s help to go after Layton, the man who shot her in 2008. She is confident she knows the rules of the game, but with no contact from the outside world Alex has to contend with a terrifying possibility.

Tom finally has an interview for a job. He also discovers he has cousins in both Derbyshire and California, and makes a plan to visit and learn more about the Derbyshire branch of the family tree. Meanwhile, Pete has to perform a delicate procedure on an alpaca at the zoo. Tom, Bea, Keith, Luba and Monk drive up to the Derbyshire farm owned by their cousins from the North. Tom is interested to find out if the grass is really greener in the country, and equally determined to get to the bottom of a dark family secret. Culture clashes notwithstanding, Tom gets his answers and some family truths are finally revealed. The family-tree plot thickens as he also hears from his American cousin, Al, on the trip. Pete's life-affirming mission at the zoo proves to be a no less sticky venture.
