Archaeologist Emma Fielding is guiding Tony, the dean of the university, during an excavation of a 17th-century settlement when they discover the body of local fisherman buried in the ground. This leads Emma to become involved in a murder investigation.

Emma is asked by her former colleague Adelle to investigate Chandler Castle, which is scheduled to be purchased by the government. Adelle does not trust Prof. Webster, who is in charge of the project, and has also lost some artworks, so she asks Emma for help. Emma calls in FBI Special Agent Jim Connor, and they begin their investigation together.
