In the premiere episode, meet Dr. Jan Pol, who, along with his wife Diane, runs thriving veterinary clinic located in Central Michigan's farm country. As hardworking as he is eccentric, Dr. Pol is nothing short of a local legend within the community thanks to his old school, no-nonsense approach to animal care. As the clinic's 30th anniversary approaches, the Pols plan an old-fashioned pig roast for their employees, longtime clients and former colleagues. Among the special guests is their son Charles, who lives in Los Angeles and decides to extend his stay so he can help his father with his formidable workload.

Dr. Pol, assisted by his son Charles, is faced with several difficult cases, including a police dog who is lethargic and losing weight for no obvious reason and an aggressive terrier whose leg seems broken yet is normal according to his x-ray. If that weren't enough, Dr. Pol must also attend to several emergency farm calls including treating a cow with a twisted stomach and one down on the ground with a prolapsed uterus. This caseload could be a struggle for vets half his age, but Dr. Pol takes it all in stride. Meanwhile, Charles, who's visiting from LA, gains a renewed respect for his dad as he watches him navigate the emotional and physical demands of working as a farm vet.

An Australian Sheepdog is brought to the clinic after eating a dead deer carcass which is poisonous to dogs. Then, Dr. Pol and son his Charles must wrestle a flock of sheep in order to take blood samples to test for OPP - Ovine Progressive Pneumonia, a progressive disease that is incurable and highly contagious. Back at the clinic, Dr. Brenda tests a lump in a Doberman's mammary gland and concludes it is pre-cancerous. Will she be able to successfully remove it to save the dog's life?

A Boer goat has lost 50 pounds after refusing to eat and Dr. Pol suspects a parasite is to blame. A French bulldog is brought into the clinic after being hit by a car. Dr. Pol must keep the dog overnight to x-ray him and to surgically remove his injured eye. And, Dr. Pol is praised by a local family for treating their English Springer Spaniel who has mange, a contagious skin diseases caused by parasitic mites.

The day begins with a waiting room packed with animals and owners. First up, a dog that really does eat homework. The curious dog gets a spiral notebook stuck in its gums. With some anesthesia and a few quick moves, Dr. Pol safely removes the spiral metal. Later, Dr. Pol is busy with clients when the tornado sirens start blaring. The whole clinic, including the owners and pets, must move to the basement for their safety and ride out the storm.

Dr. Pol and Dr. Brenda are juggling an explosion of patients. First, Dr. Brenda removes an abscess from a puppy's head. Then, Dr. Pol determines a horse's teeth are not aligned, making it difficult for her to chew. He nips the horse's teeth, allowing her to comfortably chew her food again. Next, Dr. Pol discovers a sick cow not only has a fever, but is pregnant! The fever is causing the mother to go into premature labor. Will Dr. Pol be able to deliver the calf before it's too late?
