While Joseon Dynasty noblewoman Shin Chae Kyung (Park Min Young) had a sheltered childhood, she grew to become a strong young woman. She falls for Prince Lee Yeok (Yeon Woo Jin), the half-brother of King Yeonsangun (Lee Dong Gun), and the two dream of a peaceful life together. However, the king is deeply suspicious of Yeok, and he schemes to have Chae Kyung to himself and have Yeok removed from the palace to soothe his paranoia. Chae Kyung finds herself torn between her love for Yeok and her belief that the king is a good person deep inside, further complicating the relationship between the brothers. In a cruel twist, Chae Kyung ascends to the throne as queen, but she’s dethroned only seven days later. This drama was inspired by the true story of Queen Dan Gyeong.
