On Halloween night in Ashbourne Falls, Harold runs into Yobo, a former classmate who once bullied him, while handing out candy—stirring buried childhood trauma. Elsewhere, Mabel’s car breaks down on a remote road, igniting a fury rooted in long-repressed memories of abandonment.

Harold cares for his mother, Hilda, who suffers from dementia. When she urges him to find a good woman, he seeks connection in the wrong place—visiting a sex worker on Beaver Alley, where his violent urges are tragically triggered. Meanwhile, Mabel returns to her late father’s car in Uncle Tony’s garage, seeking a place to sleep.

Harold is sent out of town by his mother, Hilda, to complete one of her strange shopping lists, but he gives in to his violent urges once again. Back home, his intrusive neighbor forces her way into his house, and in a moment of panic, he accidentally pushes her down the stairs. Desperate for help with his mother, Harold begins interviewing caretaker candidates.

Harold picks up a job as a temporary mall Santa and shares a flirty moment with Mabel when she visits. But his brief stint ends abruptly when the regular Santa returns, leaving Harold feeling cast aside. Noticing his disappointment, Mabel decides to quietly step in—making sure Harold gets another shot behind the sleigh.

When a body is discovered in the canal, Harold watches the investigation unfold on the evening news. Meanwhile, Mabel arrives for her first day as a live-in nurse for Harold’s ailing mother.
