Simon Lampton is a successful obstetrician with a seemingly ideal life and a perfect family, even though his older brother Ford has just moved in. But everything begins to unravel when a neighbor and former patient, Julia Stevens, is brutally murdered, and Simon's dysfunctional childhood comes back to haunt him. As Detective Sergeant Marie Da Silva investigates, holes begin to appear in Simon's alibi.

Simon, under police scrutiny and with his personal life crumbling around him, is an emotional wreck. His efforts to break up with Mereana lead Ford toward violence, and the politically well-connected Roza Hallwright has taken an unusual interest in Simon's family. She has a bombshell of a surprise for the doctor.

Roza confesses to her husband, David, that Elke Lampton is her daughter. Meanwhile, Mereana is missing, Simon confesses his affair to an exasperated Karen, and she kicks him out. Ford and Simon are forced to return to their childhood home to confront their violent father, and Elke discovers the secret of her true parentage.

The Lamptons and the Hallwrights battle over Elke, and a fragile Roza has an emotional breakdown, leading to an overdose. Simon pitches in to save her, but he is observed by investigative reporter Arty Cole, who confronts David with some very incriminating evidence and meets with a violent demise. All the while, Ford is manipulating Simon's relationship with Karen.

After connecting with Mereana, Simon realizes who the killer is - the one pulling the strings all along. He goes to the police, but they refuse to believe him. Meanwhile, Roza has a press conference to announce that Elke is her daughter, and she celebrates David's election win. Finally, Simon makes a desperate attempt to save his family by confronting the killer face to face.
